Radical Weight Loss Surgery
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008Ten obese people in the Lothians are the first to receive radical weight loss surgery on the NHS, with the instances of surgeries set to double up in the coming year. Patients are only picked out for the gastric band operation if their weight issue is so serious it is resulting in grievous health problems and they have attempted a range of methods to shed the pounds. One among the first people to get the operation recently told how it had altered his life. The process involves fixing a band round the upper portion of the stomach, causing the patient sense full, and to a lesser extent likely to desire to eat extra. After the initial ten surgeries were carried out with success, a further 20 patients will be operated in the coming 12 months at an expense of £150,000.
Scotland has one among the world’s biggest obesity issues, with one-in-four grownups classed as weighty. In the Lothians it has been associated with the rising numger of diabetic cases and it can also result in heart problems and serious harm to other main organs. Andrew Jacson, chairman of strategic planning and modernisation with NHS Lothian, stated: “The gastric band operation will not be provided as an easy answer to weight loss and will only be given as a last resort to those who have depleted all other methods.”
